The Detroit News has a website called Rearview Mirror. Check it out to see a few great photos of Sanders and the story of soda fountain and ice cream parlors. It also has Sanders original recipes for buttercream icing and their hot fudge topping.

I live in CA now, but still remember when Sanders was the last stop on the shopping trip to Detroit.

Here is the original recipe I got from the Detroit News.
I too miss those yummy cakes....nothing else compares.
Sanders Buttercream Icing
2 cups butter or margarine
2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
2/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
2 large egg whites
1/2 cup sifted confectioners' sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
Place butter in mixing bowl, add 2 cups confectioners' sugar, mix at low speed to obtain smooth paste. Whip at medium speed, adding the sweetened condensed milk slowly and gradually until light and fluffy.
Using a very clean bowl and beater, whip the egg whites until stiff while adding the 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar slowly. Mix this meringue slowly into the above butter mixture. Add vanilla and remaining 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar. This last amount of sugar can be doubled if stiffer icing is desired. (Note: Best results are obtained when butter and sugar are at room temperature and egg whites and milk are cold out of the refrigerator.)

Sorry...I didn't mean to post it twice!
I forgot to mention I think the crushed nuts on the outside of the cake were peanuts.

I searched Rearview Mirror in the Detroit News online but could not find any recipes for Sanders Hot Fudge. Can anyone email me the recipe from the newspaper article? I'm from Dearborn Heights and I used to go to Sanders in Dearborn, Southland Mall, and finally the one on Gratiot and 10 Mile (I think) and I live in Denver, CO now and I miss my favorite hot fudge so much. Not only can I not find a really good fudge sauce out here, but I can't find a really good vanilla ice cream either. I'm really thrilled to hear that Sanders stores are starting to come back. Now I'll have some place to go when I come back for a visit!

Looks like the site has not been used for awhile. Wonder what happened. Was wondering if anyone knew how to make the tuna sandwich that Sanders had? Loved them as a kid and still craving them.

Sanders Caramel Icing
1 pound caramels
1/2 cup hot water
1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup confectioners' sugar
Place caramels and water in double boiler. Heat and stir until a smooth cream is obtained. Cool. Place butter in mixing bowl, add sugar and mix at low speed to obtain smooth paste. Mix at medium speed, adding above cooled caramel cream slowly. If stiffer icing is desired, reduce amount of water.
