This yellow cake with caramel frosting was the only cake that my brother wanted for his birthday cake. I feel sad that we can no longer get the chocolates, cakes and even the fountain lunches that we could get downtown when out on a shopping spree. I am 54 years old and Sanders is part of my memories. It saddens me that Michigan lost something that belonged to it. I now live in Florida and met others from Michigan who have the same fondness for Sanders.

Oh lordy, do I miss that cake! Anyone got a recipe? Hot fudge cream puff sundaes -- amazing that it's still a best kept secret. And how about the butter rum ice cream pound cake at Christmas and Thanksgiving. Yeah, I know, Minnesota has lutefisk....

Just call Sanders and ask for the Caramel Icing homemade version, they will mail it to you. They also just brought back the Caramel Tea cake, I saw it at Farmer Jacks.

I'm a displaced Detroiter myself, and boy do I miss that caramel cake. Whenever I used to go back home, I would make a run-on the local Farmer Jacks and Kroger's, and literally buy the store out. Mostly it was just being greedy for that delicious cake, but part of it was wanting to bring a little piece of home back with me. That cake was a delicious reminder of home. I miss it (sniff sniff).

I have been looking for the recipe for the Sanders carmel cake. Since we don't live in Michigan any longer we can't make it to Farmer Jack's. If anyone has the recipe I would love to have it! Thanks

I used to live in Michigan, and my mother used to buy me that wonderful caramel cake for my birthday. Wow do I miss it. It's probably been over 25 years since I've had it. Anyone have the recipe? I remember it like it was yesterday. Waaaaa

I'm not even from MI, but my mom was raised in Detroit. I have inherited her love of Sanders' caramel cake. I did a search and found a couple of recipes, but haven't tried them yet. The first one is kind of hard to understand. The icing recipe at the end was posted the same way on several different sites. Good luck!

Caramel Cake like Sanders used to have
Open a 14-ounce can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk and pour it into a Pam-sprayed 9-inch loaf pan. Seal it in foil. Place it in a slightly larger oblong baking pan; add enough water to fill it almost to the rim. Bake at 425 degrees for about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Halfway through baking time, you may have to replace some of the water in the outer pan, keeping it at rim-level. At end of baking time, remove and discard foil. Transfer hot bubbly milk mixture to a Pam sprayed Pyrex, medium-sized bowl. Beat on medium speed with portable electric mixer, beating in 2 2/3 cups powdered sugar, a little at a time and 6 tablespoons real butter. Beat 2 minutes after last addition. Spread frosting over baked and completely cooled yellow cake made this way.
The cake
In large mixing bowl, beat together 18-ounce box yellow cake mix, 11/2 cups warm tap water and 2 eggs. When smooth, pour evenly into greased and flour-dusted oblong baking pan (9 x 12 x 2") and bake at 325 degrees for about 35 minutes or until tests done by inserting a tester into center of cake and having it come out clean.
When cool, spread with prepared caramel frosting. Dust top evenly with chopped walnuts. Keep cake refrigerated. Serves 8 to 10.

SANDERS CARAMEL FROSTING

1 lb. caramels
1/2 c. hot water
1 c. sweet butter or margarine
1 c. confectioners sugar

Place caramels and water in a double boiler. Heat and stir til smooth and creamy. Cool. Place butter in a mixing bowl, add sugar and mix at low speed to a smooth paste. Mix at medium speed adding caramel mixture.

My grandfather was a cook at Sanders for 30 years, I'll ask my aunt about the recipes. Of course, the fudge and some other treats are still available.

To Connie,
It sure would be nice if you could get the recipe for the "CARAMEL CAKE & FROSTING". So far the recipe that was posted above you for "SANDERS CARAMEL FROSTING" was very good and easy to make. I ended up making a Basic Yellow Cake from scratch.
Also, I,did call SANDERS to ask for the recipe, but they said that they don't release that information. And besides their recipes are done in bulk.
