Message: Yes I grew up with this cake also it was always my birthday cake. This is a recipe that was in my mothers recipe file when I went through it. It is very old and yellowed and she says it is the recipe for the frosting
SANDERS CARAMEL FROSTING
1 lb. caramels
1/8 c. hot water
1 c. sweet butter
2 c. confectioners sugar
Place caramels and water in a double boiler. Heat and stir til smooth and creamy. Cool. Place butter in a mixing bowl, add sugar and mix at low speed to a smooth paste. Mix at medium speed adding caramel mixture.
I also have a place that was featured on the Food Channel in Mississippi that makes caramel frosting and it tastes just like the Sanders to me. I bought several tubs of it and it takes two tubs for a cake. You can order by phone and they will ship

Message: This is a great memory of my past. I will visit to see if there is more.
I had never heard of Sanders until I was eight and have never tasted another caramel cake for 35 years.

Message: Anyone have the recipe for the yellow cake that Sanders used to make that had the nuts and buttercream frosting? Also, what kind of nuts were on that cake?

Message: The nuts are hazelnuts, done finely, and I would just like the cake part of the recipe. I will look for the copy my Mom had of the buttercream frosting on the birthday cake with hazelnuts on the side, as our old neighbour in Detroit was a chef/baker at Saunders in the 40's
